Upcoming Events and Projects

It has been quite awhile since I have last blogged! I have been extremely busy this semester already! I have been up to some interesting things. Right now I am some what going through a quarter life crisis! I am trying to figure out what to do in 2012 ( I am an extreme planner) and where I will end up? Should I stay in Chicago..should I move some where else? I love moving, but I am not sure what state I will venturee to next.. Anyways this is what I have been up to...

  • I am close to to the end of my internship already! I am unsure where I will go from here--maybe I will stay--maybe I will look for a different opportunity. Wherever I end up, I will make the best of the situation I am in. I have learned A LOT about the world of HR. I have found that I have a niche for recruiting. I was able to see recruiting for two different spectrum's. The medical industry and marketing as well. I am very fortunate for this opportunity.

  • Recently I attended a CIOP event. CIOP is a great place to network with other I/O Psychologists in the Chicagoland area. It is an amazing way to learn about upcoming events, internships, or job opportunities. Visit their website to learn more information http://www.ciop.net/ or add them on linkedin.

  • This spring I really want to go to Minneapolis for a cconsulting event. I did a trial here at Roosevelt and it was a wonderful opportunity, especially if you are on the fence about consulting! There are so many events going on this spring, so I will have to do some major saving! 2011, you are really hurting my wallet ! :X

  • I am also working on a few side projects. I am helping assist in two social media websites. You can click on the side link to learn more. Currently, it is a work in process. The other is still in writing. I will be sure to update you. People are quick to steal ideas, so unfortunately, I cannot blog about the details until the site is up and running. I'm all about social media, so I am thinking of one more website idea for the Minneapolis area. I will also let you know about that when it is set in stone!

  • I am also in the process or writing up details to do some international consulting services. I am really excited about this project. Hopefully when I do my travelling I will know about how much work I will have to put in. I have some connections, it will just be a matter of seeing how well it will work. This line of work will have a strong emphasis on recruiting because that is where I have the most knowledge in so far. I am hoping on attending workshops this spring on Organizational Development to further my skills and knowledge in a wide range of areas!
That is all I have for now! Stay warm--there is a very big storm headed my way! Thanks for reading...

Student Advantage Card

I want to share this information with anyone who does any type of travelling. I use the amtrak a lot because I do not have a car. I save more with this card than using the amtrak membership card. I save 15% on on travels as long as I book at least three days in advance. You can also use it for grey hound and air travel and even clothing! Check it out! I have saved a lot of money with this card!

Do people know what to do during interviews?

I am starting to wonder..do people know what to do during interviews? Do people know how to format their resumes? Do they know what to wear? Do they know what questions NOT to ask? The answer is--absolutely not! I do interviews on a day to day basis & honestly, I see some weird things.

  • Unfortunately, being a stay at home mom does not constitute as work experience
  •  Neither does handing out cake at your little cousins birthday party
  • If your outfit is something you wore to the club last weekend, it is probably not appropriate to wear it to an interview
  • Include dates on your resume--I am not a mind reader
  • You probably should not critique interview questions...during the interview
  • Don't ask for treats before the interview....and then proceed to eat them...during the interview
  • We all love our mom's....but that doesn't mean she should come inside and sit down during the interview
  • If you are going to get dressed up for an interview, get ready head to toe. Dressy shirt, dressy pants....and sneakers=not okay.
  • Do not..and I repeat do NOT..ask the receptionist and or the interviewer out on a date--you are making things awkward for the office & yourself
  • If you cannot recall the college you attended..I question if you really went at all
I am not saying that I know everything about interviews. But I can say that these things are not okay and should not be tolerated what so ever!

Africa!

This is a picture of Zanzibar(not a picture I google searched either!)--It is an island that is located in the Indian Ocean right outside the Tanzanian coast! This summer I plan on traveling to Africa. Right now I am saving up money for my plane ticket--I am more than half way! It is an idea that I have sort have joked about and now (god willing) it will become a reality! I am not sure the length of my trip because I will still have lots of bills here in Chicago but all of the complicated issues will get solved closer to the date! All I know is that this will be a wonderful leap in life! And something very exciting to look forward to. I am also excited to go to Tanzania for a business perspective as well. After 2012 I will have my degree in I/O Psychology and I am thinking about doing International Consulting of some sort. I think it is a great idea because I will have some international ties. While I am there I hope to learn new ideas and see what I can potentially can make happen in the near future.

Until my trip I need to be brushing up on my Swahili because that is the language spoken there. Luckily, I have had about 2 and half years of prior experience! But not enough to master the language! I also have to bring a completely new wardrobe because women are expected to dress a certain way. YIKES! I think the experience will be extremely rewarding~but I have a lot of things to get done and summer will be right around the corner!
This is my last weekend before school resumes on monday :( It's crazy to think that in may--I will be half way done! All I can do is push myself to the finish line..I cannot wait to have that diploma! That's all for now..I hope everyone is having fun relaxing before school starts~ I know I am! Until next time..
