Cover Letters

I have been reading some...different cover letters in the past few weeks. I decided that I will offer some advice about cover letters. Just some things that I have noticed. This is just my personal advice so you can take it or leave it!

  • Use a template--most versions of word offer several types of templates for resumes or cover letters, simply build off of it if you don't know where to begin
  • Grab the attention of the reader--you only have a few moments to catch the readers attention. Most people will simply glance at your cover letter
  • Keep it brief and to the point--This is not a research proposal--The HR team does not have all day to read your cover letter
  •   Do not include unnecessary information ie: I have never done a cover letter before so here goes nothing!
  • If you are going to include short and long term goals--make them realistic & attainable
  • Unless they ask, don't provide your picture!--This is not an audition--keep it professional
  • If you've never done a Cover Letter before, don't blow it off and not provide one. Your application may be eliminated right away
  • If you are unsure--look online for examples of cover letters or ask someone you know
  • Read the job description before you even send in your cover letter! I see tons and tons of resumes and cover letters but they fail to even READ the job description--and it shows
  • If your resume doesn't accurately depict why you are a good candidate, highlight that in your cover letter!
Again,I base these key points from my own personal HR experience and background. This is simply my personal advice to you!

CONGRATS CAROLYN ZENS

I would like to congratulate my very good friend & roomie Carolyn Zens on getting a job at Children's Memorial Hospital! She will be working in the Volunteer Resources Department. As long as I've known Carolyn she has been an extremely giving and hard working individual. She has been aspiring to work at Children's Hospital for awhile because she truly loves working with children--& she is extremely good at it! Carolyn also helped her college raise money for  Dance Marathon which is also affiliated with Children's Memorial Hospital! In addition, she has spent the past the past couple of months volunteering with CM in various projects as an intern. I am so incredibly happy for Carolyn and I know she will do amazing in her position! Congrats friend! :o)

IOOB

I got back home from San Diego on Sunday & I have to say it was an amazing trip. I had the opportunity to listen to some amazing speakers. My favorite presentation was by Ben Schneider--a legend in I/O. It was great to be surrounded by people who have the same interests that I do. If anyone is looking for a great way to learn about I/O and present your research I would suggest submitting your research for the 2012 conference next year that will be hosted in Florida. When you are a graduate student--I really think your life plan changes frequently. Last week I had my schedule planned out so that I could graduate this fall. This week I have changed my plan. I now will be graduating next spring so I can work on research and do a thesis. I also will apply for PhD programs like I have always wanted to, even if the odds are against me. I am in the process of looking for a chair for my research on Dialect Bias in Job Selection--which I am extremely excited about! I hope to start sometime in the next month or some so I can begin collecting data.

I still am looking for interns for Youventout so please feel free to contact me if you are interested. http://youventout.com/main/home.php

Last but not least, check out this article if you want to know a little bit more about the type of research I am interested in.
